Recently, I’ve been reflecting on just how much I should integrate technology into my life. I’m at the point where my Verizon cell phone contract is about done. Though the phone itself is less than 4 inches squared, I’m finding the following decision to be one of the hardest to make: switch to AT&T or NOT!? I’m at the point where a little online communication when touring would be nice, email, basic data schtuff. So I’m liking the idea of a Blackberry, or iPhone, or something like that. I had a brief love affair with the ads and pictures of the Blackberry Storm, but after hearing and reading much about its initial release, I’ve decided I should, at the very least, wait 6 months for a new version. So that leaves me with figuring out… what do i really want in my phone?
I’ve got it down to this: I want good reception, because I travel ALL the time to random places. (This initially weeded out AT&T service, though that has recently changed…) I want a camera phone since i don’t have a working camera. I want global capabilities for when touring around Europe. I want it to work with my MacBook. So there. Those are my requirements. When it comes down to it, I like the AT&T plans better than Verizon, plus their phone options; if I went with AT&T I’d then be wrestling with the decision between the iPhone and Blackberry Bold. So after reading recent articles about Verizon sharing its assets, making AT&T’s coverage much better, I’m almost at the point where I MAY switch.
Now to reflect. It’s funny to me, who grew up playing Castle on a PC running MS DOS, who used library computers for homework in college, that my MacBook is now a part of my life, rarely leaves my side, and would be the MOST devastating of items to lose. Though I’m not nearly as nervous about my 2-year old phone and its online backup of phone numbers, I wonder if I should enter an era where the phone and computer are interdependent, where I am holding on to both with dear life. Some of you are probably saying “welcome to the 21st century”. Maybe you’re in the same boat. Let me know. I’m curious. Either way, it’s time to bite the communication-technological bullet, and hope that in a few years I’m not debating about whether or not to install a cell-phone chip behind my ear.

Hello. Saw your comment on Twitter about this subject, I have Verizon and I’m currently enjoying the tunes one your site (cbemusic.com, sorry, no MySpace for me) so I thought I’d throw my comment into the mix. I’m no cell expert, but it sounds like you’ve done your homework. You mention the online backup, which is a big plus for me and Verizon. I am still using the first version of the LG Chocolate. I LOVE LG, and I really enjoy this phone. So much I’m afraid to switch. Except, I’m going to. I’ve been looking at the LG Dare. Sort of iPhone-like, but it has a slot for a microSD card (unlike the iPhone) so I can easily add more tunes. It’s got a THREE megapixel camera and…3.5 mm headphone jack on top of the phone. It even plays videos back in slow-mo. Maybe the Dare could be your temp phone until you move to AT&T (which, if you do, ick, but whatever works for you, heh).

My latest musical purchases were: Howlin’ Wolf, King Khan and the Shrines, & I most recently dug a performance by Tommy Womack in a sweet coffee shop. But I may have a new artist to add to the list 🙂
